Punta Espada Golf Course

Punta Espada Golf Course is officially opened (September 2006), all 18 holes of the beautiful Punta Espada golf course are open for play. Troon Golf, the internationally renowned course management team is staffing this truly one of a kind Nicklaus designed course.

Punta Espada uses beaches, bluffs, waterfalls, and jungle vegetation to create a true test of your golf game, but more importantly a feast for your eyes. This might possibly be the most beautiful golf location on earth. Players will have trouble concentrating on their shots with some of the most stunning views imaginable awaiting at every turn. Jack Nicklaus has done an astounding job of laying out this course and using the natural surroundings along the Caribbean. The Punta Espada Golf Course is also the first course in the world to use solely Paspalum grass, the best choice for Caribbean courses because of its resistance to salt water and lush green colour. Punta Espada can be watered directly with sea water, meaning this course will never dry out!

The signature hole of Punta Cana is beautiful and deadly – a 249 yard par 3 over the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. This thirteenth hole is a monster and you'll see the photo plastered over golf magazines worldwide. There is a bail out if you don't want to risk the full forced carry, but even that is about 220 yards. With the onshore breeze helping balls from straying out to sea, the average golfer will be using a full driver to get at this par three.

Many Caribbean courses have picturesque seaside views or have a few holes playing along the shore, but Punta Espada is the first course to have nearly half of its holes (8 of them) play directly along the beautiful waters of the Caribbean. This is truly an unimaginable venue for golf and hats off to the Cap Cana development for allocating so much valuable real estate to their golf courses – a move that will surely pay handsome dividends in years to come.

While Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic have been known as the premier golf destination in the Caribbean – their stature has now been raised significantly by having not one, but three Jack Nicklaus designed courses (the two others are under construction). Punta Cana will soon be known as one of the favored golf destinations in the world and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a pro tournament at one of the Cap Cana courses within the next decade.

If you do intend to play Punta Espada, you'd better do it in the next year or two. Once the other two Nicklaus courses are open, they intend to make this one private. That is members only and to get a membership you need to purchase property on the Cap Cana development. One of the nicest courses in the world will be off limits!

You should check out the website for the Capcana development, they have an interactive map of the Punta Espada Golf Course that walks you through all the holes.
Check out this video of the Punta Espada Golf Course that shows you great views of the back nine and what you'll be facing when you get there.
