Majestic Colonial Punta Cana is a brand new hotel (opened Jan 06); it’s in a beautiful location
but hasn’t quite grown into its shoes yet. The grounds are “going to be” spectacular – the
landscaping is still very new and hasn’t become lush yet.
There were a few of the typical mistakes made in opening the Majestic Colonial Punta Cana, such
as advertising things that they couldn’t afford to deliver. Twenty-four hour room service was in
the brochure, there was even a food service dumb-waiter in the room, but no room service. They
advertised top name brand alcohol, but took it away after the first week and sold it at a
premium. None of these things are big problems – except don’t promise what you can’t afford to
deliver – people will remember!
The rooms at the Royal Majestic Punta Cana are very nice. We asked for an extra bed for the kids
and they sent up a real twin size bed rather than a cot, we were impressed. What you’ll notice
about the rooms right away is that they are an open concept; the bathroom is not separated from
the rest of the room. The toilet is in a separate stall, but the shower and bathtub are open to
the room. I was kind of surprised, I’ve really only seen this kind of layout in couples resorts
before. This wasn’t a problem for us, but might be for some families.
There are safes in every room and a mini-fridge that was restocked daily. Beware that the AC
doesn’t work when you’re not in the room. This means you will sometimes come back to a warm
room and possibly a musty smell. Hey, that’s life in the tropics.
The pool at the Majestic Colonial Punta Cana was really nice, it seems like every resort
that goes up is battling to have the nicest pool. It’s a very long, winding pool with lots
of little islands in it which was a lot of fun for little kids. There is one really loud end
of the pool with activities going on and a quieter end where you can get a little relaxing
done. For small kids, there is a separate walk-in pool away from the hustle and bustle of
the activities. At first glance, there seemed to be tons of chairs around the pool, but they
were still all gone by 9:00 – meaning that you have to play the chair game (go out and
reserve them early in the morning).
The beach at Majestic Colonial was fantastic, beautiful white sand with lots of palapas to
sit under. The reef is not far from the shore in front of this resort, protecting the beach
a little. You can easily swim out and snorkel the onshore side of the reef. This was the
activity that we did most of the time as they didn’t seem to have a lot of their other
activities up and running yet.
As for the entertainment at the Majestic Colonial, the staff were excellent and spoke
English very well. The kids’ club seem to focus on small kids which is great. The play area
is set in a castle and has its own private swimming pool & beach. There is also a
babysitting service available so that parents can enjoy a romantic dinner out if they like.
They have a kids’ show after dinner every night that features dancing (aimed at really young
children). The disappointing part was that this pushed the adult show (which our daughter
likes to watch) to after 10:00, making it difficult for her to stay up.
The restaurants at the Majestic Colonial Punta Cana are about the same as they are at most
Punta Cana resorts – better than any other sun destinations. There is a main buffet and 7 a
la carte restaurants. Reservations are not needed at all the restaurants, it appears that
when a restaurant becomes to popular they make it reservation required. We liked the
Caribbean restaurant best and you didn’t need a reservation, just walk right in (much easier
if you go just as it’s opening).
The desk clerks are very polite and helpful – check in and check out went off without a
hitch. There is even a courtesy room in the lobby with showers and changing area for people
who have late flights and need to check out, but want to stay by the pool all day.
Final Impression
The Majestic Colonial Punta Cana is going to be a very nice resort when they’ve fully opened
and figured out how to run the place perfectly. You always have to be careful when reading
reviews of or going to a resort that’s just opened. They always offer up a great deal so
that they can fill the hotel the first week they’re open. Unfortunately, these low prices
often draw in the loud obnoxious boozers that you don’t really want to be spending your time
off work with.
